2018 Alumna of the Year Awardee – Susan Kirsh, MD, MPH

Susan Kirsh, MD, MPH is the 2018 recipient of the VA Quality Scholars Alumna of the Year Award due to her significant contributions to healthcare quality improvement through her leadership of national initiatives. Dr. Susan Kirsh was a fellow at the Cleveland VA site and graduated from the program in 2008. Dr. Kirsh has served in numerous roles during her career of improving care in the Veterans Health Administration. She practiced as an internist for many years at the Cleveland VAMC and more recently worked in VA Central Office in the Primary Care Program Office leading Shared Medical Appointments in support

Press Release: Dr. Brant Oliver’s National Multiple Sclerosis QI Collaborative Study

White River Junction Senior Faculty Scholar Brant Oliver, PhD, NP, MSN, MPH, APRN-BC is leading a national multicenter study to improve multiple sclerosis care. VTDigger.org reports news throughout the state of Vermont and announced Dr. Oliver's study in a recent press release. Alumni Spotlight – Katherine Mitchell, MD, RN

Confidently Tackling QI Dilemmas & Publishing: When I started the VAQS program, I was in awe of the alumni and their accomplishments. I wasn't sure if I could measure up. However, through the VAQS program I developed self-confidence as I progressively acquired the skills needed to create/conduct QI projects and publish in peer-reviewed journals. I applied my VAQS training to create a solid foundation upon which to build practical QI skills within real world setting of a VA Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) office. Featured Fellow Neha Pathak: What does Team-based Care Coordination Look Like? Implementation of a Care Coordination Template Pilot

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As healthcare delivery systems become more complex, policy makers are promoting care coordination (CC) as a tool to improve patient experience, quality of care and to decrease costs and risks for error. Nationally, investments have expanded healthcare models that provide team-based CC, such as Patient Centered Medical Homes and complex care management programs. But, little data about the specific activities and time required to provide necessary CC exists, limiting the ability for healthcare teams to optimize CC delivery. Alumni Spotlight – Mekeshia Bates, DNP, MPH, MSN

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We are honored to spotlight Dr. Mekeshia Bates who has been highlighted by the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Nurse Officers for her passion and service to the Corps. On April 1 ,2017 she was promoted to Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) and she is currently stationed at Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Primary Health Care, Office of Quality Improvement. Dr. Mekeshia Bates is a doctorally-prepared adult psychiatric nurse practitioner licensed in Maryland and Washington, DC. She is passionate about providing psychiatric care including counseling and medication management across the adult lifespan. Dr. Bates has experience with adult psychiatry, geriatrics, trauma, and addictions.
